Anything-But-a-Boat Regatta Returns for the 75th Anniversary Celebration

With names like Styrofoam Steamer, Kon-Taki, Gossamer Goldfish, and Rat Racer, the unusual has been the expected for entries in the Anything-But-A- Boat Regatta, a popular community event held for the first time in 1980, during the Institution's 50th anniversary celebration. The regatta, held all but one year between 1980 and 1985, is being revived and is scheduled again Saturday, August 6, 2005, as part of 75th Anniversary activities.

The event attracted about 200 spectators and twelve "unboat" entries in its first year in Great Harbor and grew to more than a thousand spectators and nearly two dozen entries from local organizations and individuals. Prizes were awarded in various categories and a good time was had by all.

This year's race promises to challenge the creativity of local "unboat" designers, and should be a lot of fun for both spectators and participants alike. For more information contact Ann Devenish (adevenish@whoi.edu) or Mike Lagrassa (mlagrassa@whoi.edu).
