In the past two decades, George has made a second career as an educator—of schoolchildren (these are from Martha’s Vineyard), civic leaders, journalists, and fellow citizens. He has long been a scientific advisor for Sea Lab, an educational project and center in New Bedford that brings coastal science to K-12 students by way of collaboration with researchers at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Boston College. He has been a regular participant in teacher training programs at WHOI, and also assists in training journalists and grad students with crash courses in ocean sampling. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst)
