Andy Maffei, left, congratulates Hartley Hoskins on being named the recipient of the 1998 Vetlesen Award for his exceptional contributions to the WHOI community. Hartley’s nomination comments included:

• “one of the most diverse technologists at WHOI; does what is necessary to accomplish the objectives, even if it means disregarding his dignity or working off hours.”
• “he doesn’t give up easily and always devotes his full self to the cause of the project; it is contagious and carries us all to a higher level.”
• “constant selfless devotion in supporting the scientific mission of the institution.”
• “he treats everyone on a friendly, honest, polite, and equitable basis.”
