Buddy Baker accepts the Penzance Award for the carpenter shop at the 1991 Employee Recognition Ceremony. The award is given annually to a WHOI group for sustained exceptional performance, outstanding representation of the WHOI spirit, and major contributions to the personal and professional lives of WHOI staff.

Ernest “Buddy” Baker grew up near Quisset Harbor in Falmouth, and his first job was working for his uncle in the Quissett boatyard. He later did woodwork for a local contractor for a number of years before joining the Institution carpentry shop in 1975. He says that he got up every morning looking forward to going to work at WHOI—a walk for him, as he lives in Woods Hole. “I always enjoyed whatever we were working on,” he says, from laboratory cabinetry to outfitting ships. Buddy was promoted to senior carpenter in 1982 and became shop supervisor in 1991. He served in that position until he retired in 1994. As is the case for many other Institution employees, WHOI has been a family business for Buddy—daughters Karen and Janice both worked at the switchboard (as his sister-in-law, Isabel Penman, does now), his younger son Stewart worked on WHOI ships, and Karen’s husband, A.D. Colburn, is captain of R/V Knorr.
